My Wife Has 100's of Shoes and Doesn't Wear Any of Them

by Neal Lebar (President of ICS Shoes)

I was speaking to my good friend Jeff and our conversation turned to our wives. We've both been married more than 35 years and have learned to roll with our spouses quirks. He mentioned that his wife has hundred's of shoes that she never wears. "She goes to the store and comes back with a few pair, wears them once and never again." I thought, that is a great hobby, collecting shoes, I know many people do that. Then he said, "the reason she doesn't wear them again is because they hurt too much. She is now 65 yrs old and has really bad bunions. So, the shoes feel OK in the store, but after wearing them once, she cannot return them, filling our closet." I asked him "why she didn't buy shoes that accommodated her bunions?" He said, "because she is into fashion and hoped the shoes would be comfortable.”

I've been in the therapeutic shoe business for 15 years. Like the old "shoe makers son", I have to admit, I did the same thing as Jeff's wife, bought shoes and wore them once. When I was younger, I could find many options of shoes and they would fit like a glove. As I got older, my feet got wider, developed heel pain, toe issues, and worst of all plantar fasciitis. Two years ago, the pain was so pronounced, I finally decided to buy shoes with the proper width and depth. I donated all of my shoes, several that I had only worn once and made the Plunge! You would think that someone in the business would "get it", but I had to have several foot issues, before I addressed them. I now have shoes for every occasion and have to go eeny-meeny-miny-moe, to decide which one I'm going to wear today. I find myself standing in my closet, comparing the colors of my cloths to the shoes - having to make sure they match. These are the kind of decisions I now like... too many shoes that actually fit like a glove.

Over the last few years, the world of shoes has dramatically changed. Comfort is the new buzz word. Last year, the big comfort trend was athletic shoes with Wool uppers... incredibly comfortable and warm. Perfect, for those people with bunions, as the sides of the shoes reduce the pressure".
The biggest challenge people now have is, most of these shoes are only available online. They are made by manufacturers like: Dr Comfort, Drew, Apex, I-Runner, Apis. These companies specialize in accommodating foot ailments like: bunions, hammertoes, craw toes, neuropathy, charcot, plantar fasciitis, etc.

As I concluded my conversation with Jeff, I said, "ask your wife if she could please clean out that closet, donate her shoes, and stop being in constant pain!”
